Bonville Creek Kayak Club is the formal incorporated body, which commenced life as the Bonville Bashers way back in the mid 1980s.
It commenced life as a group of mid aged people using paddle craft to achieve some level of physical exercise. The level of exercise was elevated by a touch of competition. Handicap racing evolved to enhance the competition and compensate for varying levels of fitness, skill and craft. Since that time nothing much has changed. Handicap racing takes place every Saturday afternoon with race distances varying from 5km to 8km. The first Saturday in the month members have the option to tackle longer courses up to 27km. The racing is `serious’ fun and it is incumbent upon all members to see that nobody gets to serious about the results. It is more important to have fun.
All types of craft can be and are accommodated, from slalom boats to K1s/K2s and unlimited Ocean skis.
Members looking for greater challenges are encouraged to participate in the Northern Zone Marathon Series, the Myall Classic, the Hawkesbury Classic, the Murray Marathon and state and national titles.
The `Hawkesbury’, in particular, has been an annual event for many members and is almost seen as a `Rite of Passage’ for aspiring kayakers.
Mid week paddling is informal with most members getting on the water at sometime or another.
Racing starts at 3pm [4pm summer time] at Moller Drive Bonville Waters. Visitors are welcome. For more information contact the secretary on 66526626 or email C_spider@bigpond.com.
